Scripts for installing and uninstalling iRODS Last updated September 2012 The iRODS distribution uses several configuration files and shell/Perl scripts to build the iRODS system. See MANAGE.txt for information about scripts to manage iRODS after it has been installed. 0. Upgrading an existing iRODS installation If you are upgrading to a new version of iRODS you will normally want to keep your existing state information (the ICAT, information on dataObjects, collections, resources, users, etc). To do so, first run the patch file for either PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MySQL to make some needed updates to tables (if any). Assuming your iCAT database is named ICAT, this would be, for example: psql ICAT < server/icat/patches/all-patch-v3.1tov3.2.sql or sqlplus name@instance @server/icat/patches/all-patch-v3.1tov3.2.sql or mysql ICAT < server/icat/patches/all-patch-v3.1tov3.2.sql For 3.2 the patch sql script will add a table and an index for the filesystem metadata feature, and add tokens related to other new capabilities. If you are upgrading from an older version, you'll need to apply the patch file for each released version that has one, in sequence. For most releases, there are separate patch files for each type of DBMS. See the server/icat/patches directory for the set of patch files. Then run either of these (they are equivalent): ./irodsupgrade or ./irodssetup --upgrade and follow the prompts. This runs in a similar manner as irodssetup as described below, but with fewer prompts and default settings for upgrading an existing ICAT. The system will then be updated and new features and bug fixes will be installed. Others features, such as GSI, can be enabled via your answers to the script. And others are enabled in other ways. Note that starting in 3.2, irodssetup can use system-installed postgresql and ODBC instead of building them from source. See the irods web site release notes for information on the new features and bug fixes, and other information. 1. Installing iRODS for the first time: use 'irodssetup' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To install iRODS where you have no previous version (from scratch), execute the setup script in the iRODS home directory: ./irodssetup The script prompts you for what to install and where to install it, then does the job. This typically takes 1/2 hour or so and is the recommended way to install iRODS. This script saves its work in configuration files in the config subdirectory, the main one being: config/irods.config Normally, there is no need for you to view or edit these files, however you can edit irods.config. If you rerun irodssetup, the saved settings of irods.config will be the default choices. The config files include comments that explain their settings. More detailed logs are in ./installLogs with names corresponding to the subscripts that are run (see below), for eaxmple: installPostgres.log, installMake.log, and finishSetup.log. Note that the scripts use internal perl functions for many operations which will not appear as shell commands in the log. 'irodssetup' and/or the subscripts can be rerun if needed. Each substep determines state and performs its function only when needed. 1.1. Installation options iRODS is a flexible system that can be installed in several ways by answering the prompts differently: * Install iRODS server, iCAT, commands, and Postgres The scripts download and install Postgres first, then build and configure iRODS to use that database. This is the recommended choice for new installs. * Install iRODS server, iCAT, and commands You will be prompted for information about an existing Postgres, Oracle or MySQL database. The scripts build and configure iRODS to use that database. * Install iRODS server, and commands You will be prompted for a host that is already running an iRODS server with iCAT support. No new database is needed. The scripts build and configure iRODS to access the other iRODS+iCAT server. * Install iRODS commands The scripts configure and build the i-commands. No new server or database is needed. You will then need to set up your ~/.irods/.irodsEnv file to connect to one of the servers in your grid (see the irods web site, the page "User Environment", for more). 2. Installing iRODS without using 'irodssetup' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 'irodssetup' script runs five steps for the installation that you can run directly, if finer control is needed. However, we recommend that you try the 'irodssetup' script first because it already supports a large number of common options, and it will give you a starting point for adjusting your installation. 'irodssetup' asks if you want to use advanced settings, which, when selected, will provide additional prompts and options for you to choose. The five install steps are: scripts/irodsprompt Prompt for configuration settings. Initial settings are read from 'config/irods.config', and new settings are written back to that file. scripts/installPostgres Download and build Postgres and ODBC distribtions. Uses parameters in 'config/installPostgres.config'. Saves a few parameters to 'config/irods.config'. scripts/configure Configure the iRODS build. Uses and saves parameters in 'config/irods.config'. Saves compilation parameters to 'config/config.mk' and 'config/platform.mk'. make Build iRODS. Uses configuration parameters in several include files in 'config/*.mk'. scripts/finishSetup Install database tables and initialize iRODS. Uses parameters in 'config/irods.config'. 2.1. Installing with a new Postgres database Create a new Postgres configuration file from a template: cp config/installPostgres.config.template config/installPostgres.config Edit 'config/installPostgres.config' to change defaults if needed. See comments in the file. Run: scripts/installPostgres scripts/configure make scripts/finishSetup You may want to add command-line options to 'scripts/configure' to enable or disable special iRODS features. Run 'scripts/configure --help' to get a list of options. 2.2. Installing with an existing Postgres database Create a new iRODS configuration file from a template. The easiest way is to run 'scripts/irodsprompt' once to set up defaults: scripts/irodsprompt Alternatively, you can copy a template as a starting point: cp config/irods.config.template config/irods.config Edit 'config/irods.config' and set database parameters: $DATABASE_TYPE = 'postgres'; $DATABASE_ODBC_TYPE = 'unix'; $DATABASE_HOME = '/path/to/postgres'; $DATABASE_HOST = 'localhost'; $DATABASE_PORT = '5432'; $DATABASE_ADMIN_NAME = 'postgres-user-account'; $DATABASE_ADMIN_PASSWORD = 'postgres-user-password'; The ODBC type must be "unix" for the unix ODBC, or "postgres" for the old Postgres ODBC. iRODS works best with the unix ODBC. The Postgres database must be running on the same host as an iRODS server with the iCAT enabled. The iCAT stores metadata about the catalog of archived files in the database. Also set iRODS parameters: $IRODS_HOME = '/path/to/irods'; $IRODS_PORT = '1247'; $IRODS_ADMIN_NAME = 'rods'; $IRODS_ADMIN_PASSWORD = 'rods'; $IRODS_ICAT_HOST = ''; iRODS can be configured with servers running on multiple hosts. Only one of those servers needs the iCAT enabled, so only one host needs Postgres installed. The other iRODS servers on other hosts can be configured to communicate with the first iRODS server, its iCAT, and the iCAT's Postgres database. If you are installing iRODS to talk to a remote iCAT, set $IRODS_ICAT_HOST to the name of the iCAT host. Run: scripts/configure make scripts/finishSetup You may want to add command-line options to 'scripts/configure' to enable or disable special iRODS features. Run 'scripts/configure --help' to get a list of options. If the existing Postgres does not have the iCAT tables installed yet, the 'finishSetup' script will install them. iRODS will coexist with other uses of the same Postgres database. 2.3. Installing with an existing Oracle database Create a new iRODS configuration file from a template. The easiest way is to run 'scripts/irodsprompt' once to set up defaults: scripts/irodsprompt Alternatively, you can copy a template as a starting point: cp config/irods.config.template config/irods.config Edit 'config/irods.config' and set: $DATABASE_TYPE = 'oracle'; $DATABASE_HOME = '/path/to/oracle'; $DATABASE_HOST = 'oracle-host-name'; $DATABASE_PORT = 'oracle-port-number'; $DATABASE_ADMIN_NAME = 'oracle-user-account'; $DATABASE_ADMIN_PASSWORD = 'oracle-user-password'; The user account name must have the form 'schema@instance' per Oracle conventions. Also set iRODS parameters: $IRODS_HOME = '/path/to/irods'; $IRODS_PORT = '1247'; $IRODS_ADMIN_NAME = 'rods'; $IRODS_ADMIN_PASSWORD = 'rods'; $IRODS_ICAT_HOST = ''; iRODS can be configured with servers running on multiple hosts. Installing with an existing MySQL database Also see the MySQL page on the iRODS web site for more information: https://www.irods.org/index.php/MySQL MySQL server has to be running already and properly configured. iRODS requires MySQL version 5.0.3 or later. There are two critical configuration options required for MySQL server to support iRODS: 1. InnoDB support has to be enabled, which is usually the case. It does not need to be set as default table type, the scripts that create tables specify table type explicitly. 2. Server must be running with the option 'lower_case_table_names=1'. This option is usually specified in the server configuration file (like /etc/my.cnf or /etc/mysql/my.cnf) or on the command line. An empty database has to be created for ICAT together with the user who has full control over that database (with a secure password). iRODS uses ODBC to communicate with the MySQL server, and ODBC has to be installed before you run iRODS setup scripts. If you dont have unixODBC installed already on your system then you can get recent version from http://www.unixodbc.org/. In addition to ODBC manager you will need ODBC driver for MySQL, which is available from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/. After installing MySQL driver one has to define ODBC Data Source for the MySQL server. This can be done conveniently with a GUI application ODBCConfig which comes with unixODBC or manually editing odbc.ini file. In addition to a regular parameters such as server host name and database name there is one critical parameter required by ICAT: 'Option'. It has to be set to a value 2, which corresponds to CLIENT_FOUND_ROWS MySQL connection option. You can include other options in that value too (consult driver.h in mysql ODBC driver source) but always make sure that bit 0x2 in Option is set! Knowing the name of the ODBC Data Source and user name and password one can proceed with the configuration of the iRODS. Instead of the following, you could instead run 'irodssetup' to complete the installation. Also set iRODS parameters: $IRODS_HOME = '/path/to/irods'; $IRODS_PORT = '1247'; $IRODS_ADMIN_NAME = 'rods'; $IRODS_ADMIN_PASSWORD = 'rods'; $IRODS_ICAT_HOST = ''; iRODS can be configured with servers running on multiple hosts. Uninstalling iRODS and Postgres ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3.1. Dropping the iRODS tables Use the 'drop' option on 'irodsctl' to delete the database tables: ./irodsctl drop 3.1. Uninstall Postgres as installed by iRODS If you used the 'irodssetup' or 'installPostgres' scripts to download and install Postgres, then you can use the 'uninstallPostgres' script. First stop the iRODS and database servers, then run the script: ./irodsctl stop scripts/uninstallPostgres Optionally, if you don't plan on using Postgres again, delete your '~/.pgpass' and '~/.odbc.ini' files. Leaving them there won't hurt anything. 3.2. Uninstall iRODS Stop the servers and delete the iRODS home directory. There are no additional files in the rest of the OS. ./irodsctl stop cd .. rm -rf the_irods_directory Optionally, if you don't plan on using iRODS again, delete your '~/.irods' directory. Leaving it there won't hurt anything.
